Architectural Studies

The Minor in Architectural Studies (ARST) is designed as a pre-professional degree option for those students wishing to pursue the Master of Architecture (MArch) program at the U of C, or other related graduate design programs.

The Minor also provides a good foundation if you are planning to study other design-related programs offered at the U of C or elsewhere.

What is the Minor in Architectural Studies (ARST)?

The Minor in Architectural Studies includes courses equivalent to the first year of the Faculty of Environmental Design's four year Master of Architecture professional degree program

Classes in the Minor program are shared with students in the March program.

Architectural Studies may be taken as a Minor in degree programs in the Faculties of:
  • Communication and Culture
  • Fine Arts, Humanities
  • Management
  • Science
  • Social Sciences

Preparation for Applying to the Faculty of Environmental Design

If you intend to apply to the Faculty of Environmental Design, the shortest route is to take the Minor as part of a three year non-major Bachelor of General Studies (BGS).

If you have completed the Minor in ARST (or a similar pre-professional degree) and are admitted to the Faculty of Environmental Design, you may proceed directly to the second year of the MArch program.

This means that you may obtain a professional Master of Architecture degree in six years after graduation from high school.

How do I get the Minor in Architectural Studies?

Applicants to the Minor in Architectural Studies must have completed at least 4 full course equivalents.

Therefore, you would normally apply at the end of your first year of university (applications are due by April 1).

If you hold a diploma such as those from institutes of technology, you will receive 5 full course credits towards a non-major (three year) Bachelor of General Studies; this would include transfer credit for some of the Minor courses.

In the first year of the three year BGS, you will have to designate an interim Minor if you are planning to apply for ARST.
