My Lunch with Career Man

November 7, 2007

My search for Mr. Mysterious led me to the Coms and Culture Student Lounge. He was there last Tuesday around noon...my thought was perhaps he was a creature of habit. I walk in around 12:15. There is a student off to the corner busy on their lap top, one curled up for a nap on the couch, and David Cataford beside the microwave.

What a sight! I couldn't help but wonder what this guy was doing. Doesn't he have a job to do or something? After all he is the Faculty's career advisor. I popped my left over mac and cheese in the microwave and flashed a smile at Career Man.

That's when he just started talking. At first I was completely freaked. I was watching every second of the timer flash by...I don't have anything to say to this guy. I'm ccGirl, I've got things to do.

But then he asked me questions that I had been asking myself... hearing them out loud made them seem important and made me seem normal.

"So how are your classes? What skills are you developing? What jobs are starting to appeal to you? What are you going to do after you get your degree?"

Needless to say, Career Man was good at his job. We chatted as we ate our lunches. He made me think about creating a future plan. He also suggested work experience. I always thought I'd just get THAT job after my time in school; developing work skills hadn't crossed my mind.

He directed me to the career services webpage. Apparently you can do online resume workshops and create your own killer resume. David said if I came back next week he would look at it for me and give me some pointers. He is confident I can score a summer job relevant to what I want to do...and maybe even get applicable part time work (which sure beats working at American Eagle...folding t-shirts = blah!).

This guy really cares! I'm not just a number to him. Before I left he said "I'll be your career advisor for the rest of your life! So come to me anytime if you need advice or help." And I got his business card!

Not only did I get a full on confidence boost and find someone important who cares about my future but mom and dad are going to be so impressed!

Until next time,
ccGirl
