ccGirl here,

Sad news...I was unsuccessful at mastering my fear of talking to a professor. I walked by my prof's office only to find another student had beat me to the chase. I couldn't decide whether or not I should wait around ... so I didn't. I'm pretty sure I heard the professor telling me to wait just a moment as I scampered away, but it was too late. The butterflies in my stomach had turned into frogs in my throat.

However, this story does have a happy ending...  

In my defeat (and boredom) I headed down the hall to the CnC Student Lounge (SS311). I noticed a note on the whiteboard that was looking for student volunteers for next year's U of C 101. I admit I could have been a little (okay, a lot) more engaged with my 101 group activities at ... but I thought that my new stance on making the most out of my student experience could potentially rub off on some ccGirls and ccBoys in the making.

And, of course, I thought of my own mini-cc from last semester's Student for a Day sessions.

The note said to pop by Dr. Dawn Johnston's office (SS 234) or email her for more information on volunteering. I still had an hour to kill so I decided to test my confidence. I headed downstairs and knocked on her door. She looked up from her desk and seemed so excited. Dr. Johnston invited me in ... and at that point she didn't even know why I was there.

We chatted for twenty minutes about 101, about my potential responsibilities, and my own student experience. She seemed almost inspired by my ability to shift my focus and rethink my previous apathetic attitude. It was nice to get a pat on the back...and have someone else affirm that I was on the right track.

I'm officially signed up for a 101 interview. I'm pumped. I'll be co-leader of a group of CnC students and I get to pass on all the tricks I've picked up.

I even found out that all of you can get your own 101 leader applications online.

And Dr. Johnston and I ... well we are on a first name basis (waayy better than a business card). You're the best Dawn!

Keep crossing your fingers blog readers...I know with your accountability I can get over my fear of professors.

Spotted ... Mr. Mysterious was headed to Dawn's office just as I headed out. He said a cool hello and I flashed a smile. If we are 101 group leaders together I may die.
