Facing My Fears

March 6, 2008

ccGirl here,

I got a midterm exam back yesterday. I hate that feeling...you know, the feeling you get as you are holding your graded exam in your hand, you have no idea how you did, and you don't particularly want to open it up to see. Well I finally built up the nerve and opened up the test after class was dismissed. I didn't do half bad!

What a relief! But there was one short answer question that clearly threw me a curveball. I decided on the spot that this would be the perfect time to face my professor phobia. I remember one of my TA's from last semester explaining that it was important to understand your mistakes on midterms, because it would stop you from making the same mistakes on the final.

Thankfully my prof's office hours were scheduled right after class...I had no time to think about my decision and chicken out.

I took my time heading up to his office. And I may have circled the hallway on Social Science's third floor a few times before actually stopping at his office door...

The meeting was fabulous! I can't believe it has taken me this long to sit down with a professor. I think my biggest realization was that professors are just regular people too (just very smart regular people). He asked me all about my experience at the University so far and was genuinely interested in my life as a student.

We went over my "problem" question and even though the exam is nearly two months away I already feel more confident. I am so glad I faced my fear! I know that being able to approach my future professors will only help me as I continue my education.

Before I left my prof even thanked me for coming in. He said he wished more students would take advantage of his office hours.

If I can do it...you can! Sending good vibes to any of you who have a professor visit in your near future.

Until next time,
ccGirl
