The program is interdisciplinary allowing students to benefit from exposure to faculty members and ideas and developments from different fields.
The Canadian Studies Degrees offer an in-depth introduction to Canadian Literature, the arts, politics and society.
Canadian Studies (CNST) also has the status of a Minor Field of Study for students registered in in either a Major or Honours degree program in the Faculty of Communication & Culture or in a Faculty such as Humanities, Science or Social Sciences.

Canadian Studies:
- examines fundamental themes and problems in Canadian society
- studies the origins and transformations of Canada’s diverse identities
- explores the expression of these identities in contemporary & historical contexts
- offers the choice of participating in northern community development projects

Does Canadian Studies offer an international component?
The study of Canada is inherently international. International connections have been a fundamental aspect of Canadian development.
As well, Canada is one of the most studied countries in the world; according to the International Council for Canadian Studies, there are over 7,000 Canadianists around the world in 30 countries that reach over 150,000 students.
The Arctic Circumpolar concentration in Canadian Studies offers the opportunity of international contacts with indigenous communities in the circumpolar Arctic. |

Does Canadian Studies offer joint-degree programs?
Yes! Students may pursue a five-year program which leads to both the Bachelor of Arts in Canadian Studies degree and the Bachelor of Education (Master of Teaching Program) degree.

Is There a Language Requirement? |

There is no language requirement but the study of French is highly recommended for those who want a career in the federal government, or who are interested in Canada’s French speaking communities.
Depending on a student’s interests, it might also be important to obtain competency in native or other non-native languages. |
