Are you a first-year Communication and Culture student looking to meet new people, get involved in the campus community, and make the most of your university experience?

New to the U may be just what you're looking for!

New to the U is a series of informal meetings between small groups of first-year students, led by Communication and Culture Director of Students, Dr. Dawn Johnston. Students generally meet for an hour, once a week, to discuss topics such as academic success skills, learning styles, career opportunities, and degree navigation in a fun, interactive environment. Students are invited to participate in the Fall and/or Winter semesters.

Why participate in New to the U?

New to the U provides a great opportunity to explore Communication and Culture's programs and resources, learn academic success strategies, connect with professors and instructors, and become an active part of the U of C community.

Transition

University is a time of much positive change and growth-if you know how to make the most of it. Through New to the U, you'll get additional assistance that will help set you on the track to a successful university experience and a timely graduation.

Academic Success

University classes are different from high school. How will you succeed? Through hands-on workshops and conversations with your mentors, your group will explore academic skills that will help you in your classes-now and in the future.

Mentorship

Learn about your field, get your questions answered, and form a meaningful connection with an enthusiastic Communication and Culture faculty member. Also, meet with a senior Communication and Culture student who understands what you're going through and can show you the ropes. Through interactive activities and discussions, you'll get to know yourself and each other better.

Career Exploration

Most students come to university wanting a job when they graduate, but don't have a plan on how to get there after they graduate. Sounds familiar? By the end of New to the U, you will have a better understanding of the programs, resources, and possible career options in the Faculty of Communication and Culture.
