Graduate Student Support

All full-time students are eligible for financial assistance.  However, there is no financial assistance available for part-time students. A complete listing of research support can be found in the Faculty of Graduate Studies Calendar (Awards & Financial Assistance), purchased from the University of Calgary Bookstore, or on their web site at:   http://www.grad.ucalgary.ca//funding

Graduate Research Scholarships (GRSs)

GRSs are intended to support students' research activities during the preparation of a thesis.  Students may be eligible for a maximum of 4 units of support during their program.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GATs)

GAT's provide support in exchange for the student's assistance in a teaching capacity.  Teaching assistants are normally responsible for about 12 hours of work per week  -- comprised of leading tutorials as well as the marking of exams and papers.

Dean's Entrance Scholarships

Each year the Faculty is able to nominate a few of its PhD students for these awards.

Faculty of Communication and Culture Doctoral Scholarships

All doctoral students are eligible for these awards in the first 4 years of their programs.

Cogeco Inc. Scholarship

Awarded to a Communications Studies students on the basis of academic excellence.

Lynda R. Hodges-Zwerman Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a Communications Studies student with an interest in the electronic media.

Graduate Teaching Fellowships (GTFs)

After doctoral students have completed their candidacy examinations they are eligible for GTFs.  These awards supplement the funds they receive when they teach courses as instructors of record.  Students are eligible for 1 GTF per term - for a maximum of 2 GTFs per academic year.
