Research Exhibit Helping to Keep People With Mental illness Off The Streets
A one-of-a-kind exhibit explores the links between Schizophrenia, experiences in the health care system, and homelessness.
The exhibit, which is traveling to major cities across Canada, is the result of a University of Calgary study that included people with Schizophrenia as co-researchers. One of the primary findings identified that most people with mental illness are not included in decision-making about their own treatment regardless of their ability to make decisions for themselves or their caregiver's ability to make decisions for them.

Four Communication and Culture professors showcase their research in the first ever academic book about the Calgary Stampede. Icon, Brand, Myth: The Calgary Stampede, edited by Max Foran, evolved out of a one-of-a-kind course on the culture of the Calgary Stampede and investigates the iconography and cultural significance of those 10 mad days in July.

New Film Studies program expected to help build Alberta film industry
While four Canadians earned Oscar nominations in major categories this morning including Sarah Polley for her adapted screenplay, Away From Her, the Faculty of Communication and Culture's new Film Studies program promises to become a contributing force for developing even more homegrown talent. The Faculty has launched southern Alberta's first Film Studies degree program and will immediately begin admitting students for study in Fall 2008. >> More

Congratulations to Dr. Charles Tepperman and Laura Golebiowski.Film Studies professor Dr. Charles Tepperman was awarded the Dissertation Award from the Society for Cinema and Media Studies for his dissertation, "Communicating a New Form of Knowledge: Tracing the Amateur Cinema League and its Films (1926 - 1954). The award carries a $1,000 prize and Tepperman received the award at a ceremony in March.
Laura Golebiowski, a second year Communication and Culture student received The Petroleum History Society's award for article of the year in 2007. She originally wrote her paper, a media analysis of the widespread reaction to the discovery of oil in Turner Valley in 1914, for her first year seminar General Studies 201. It was subsequently published in the journal, Alberta History. Golebiowski received the award at a March 26 ceremony at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel.
