Researcher Garners Gertrude J. Robinson Prize

A unanimous decision has made Dr. Bart Beaty this year's winner of the Gertrude J. Robinson prize - awarded by the Canadian Communications Association for best book published on Communications Studies. Dr. Beaty was selected from a field of 11 other candidates, making it the most competitive year for the prize. The win also marks a first for the University of Calgary.

Beaty's work, Fredric Wertham and the Critique of Mass Culture, examines the career of the eponymous scholar, revealing him to be a complicated and significant figure whose efforts extend well beyond the notoriety gained as an anti-comic book advocate.Copies of Fredric Wertham and the Critique of Mass Culture available from Amazon and Chapters Indigo.

Beaty is widely-recognized expert on comic books and graphic novels. In addition to his role as professor, Dr. Beaty is a regular contributor to the Comics Reporter. Beaty also has another book due out at the end of the year, titled Unpopular Culture: Transforming the European Comic Book in the 1990's, published by the University of Toronto Press.
