How Canadians Communicate: Contexts of Pop Culture

The Alberta Global Forum, in partnership with the Faculty of Communication and Culture, University of Calgary, and Athabasca University, is bringing the third How Canadians Communicate conference to Calgary. This time the theme is “Contexts of Popular Culture.” Invited scholars will gather for three days of workshops, presentations, and lively discussion about the role that popular culture plays in forging the nation. Dr. Miller's participation is supported through the CanWest Global Endowment Fund.

The conference begins on Thursday, October 11th with a public lecture by Dr. Toby Miller as part of the Triple-C lecture series. Dr. Miller is a leading international scholar in cultural studies and the author of over twenty books. He currently holds a unique position at UC Riverside, across three departments and one program, with the intention of sustaining and developing a dynamic interdisciplinary research environment in media and culture. On October 12-13th there will be two days of intensive workshops at the Banff Conference Centre.

The organizers and editors of the volume that will be published from the conference are Dr. Bart Beaty and Dr. Rebecca Sullivan from the University of Calgary, and Dr. Gloria Filax and Dr. Derek Briton from Athabasca University. Invited guests include: Heather Devine, Zoë Druick, David Gregory, Michelle Helstein, Michael Keren, André Loiselle, Frits Pannekoek, Johanne Sloan, Will Straw, Imre Szeman, David Taras, Serra Tinic, Ira Wagman, and Kevin Young.
